A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 448-449 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This entry describes the character of human ambulation and how this has been shaped over the centuries to the present day. It highlights how technological, economic and cultural priorities have affected participation in walking for everyday travel and leisure in rich and poor societies. Attention is drawn to the contemporary moves to reduce car use in urban areas and to promote walking for short journeys and the importance of this for health and wellbeing and a sustainable future.
