A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 452-453 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Wayfinding and wayshowing are two related concepts. While wayshowing emphasises the provision of information, wayfinding focuses on the cognitive process of finding the destination. The wayshowing and wayfinding systems can be categorised into two scales: indoor and outdoor. Signs and maps are two common components of the wayshowing system, while the ‘legibility’ is the main design concept. The integration and maintenance are key challenges in designing a wayshowing and wayfinding systems. Lastly, users’ perceptions and attitudes need to be considered in designing more user-friendly wayshowing and wayfinding systems.
