Workplace travel plans

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 460-461 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Workplace travel plans promote sustainable commuting through options such as public transport, cycling, carpooling, and walking, contributing to reduced congestion and emissions while enhancing employee wellbeing. Typically, companies implement initiatives like public transport incentives, bike schemes, shuttle services, and end-of-trip facilities to support sustainable commuting. These strategies increase employee satisfaction, improve retention, and attract and retain talent, while boosting corporate reputations for environmental responsibility. Government programmes and transport management associations (TMAs) further support these efforts by encouraging public–private collaborations. Additionally, flexible work arrangements and work-from-home (WFH) policies, accelerated by COVID-19, complement workplace travel plans by reducing peak-time congestion and minimising commuting-related carbon footprints.
