Airport security

Marina Efthymiou

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 50-51 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This entry explores the concept of airport security. The International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs), detailed in Annex 17, provide a global regulatory framework. The entry outlines the key elements of the framework that are relevant for airports. These include preventive security measures, security programmes and planning, surveillance and monitoring, training and capacity building, regulatory compliance and cooperation, and incident response and recovery. The post-9/11 era has seen significant advancements, including rigorous screening, advanced technologies such as biometric identification and AI, and robust cybersecurity frameworks.
