A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 56-57 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Artificial intelligence (AI) encompasses a diverse set of approaches that are widely used across the transport sector. Machine learning, computer vision, optimisation, and data fusion are so widely used they may not be recognisable as AI applications in transport. Other applications, such as customer service chatbots and autonomous vehicle algorithms, are identifiable as AI innovations with an impact on transport and society. This entry presents a series of applications of AI in transport spanning customer experience, automation, operations, and planning described in terms of their contribution to transport and society.
