Bus privatisation and deregulation
Jonathan Cowie
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 72-73 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This entry gives an overview of the ‘full public’, ‘full private’ and ‘competitive tender’ models of bus operation, and outlines the British experience with bus privatisation and deregulation over the short, medium and longer terms. It highlights that in other developed countries, bus privatisation has generally taken the form of the full private model for long distance coach services and the competitive tender model for staged services.
