Bus rapid transit

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 74-75 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Bus rapid transit (BRT) is a high-quality, high-capacity public transportation system designed to combine the capacity and speed of a metro system with the flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and simplicity of a bus system. BRT systems are characterised by dedicated lanes, priority at intersections, off-board fare collection and fast boarding operations, and various technologies that improve efficiency and passenger experience. Originating in Curitiba, Brazil, 50 years ago, BRT has since gained global popularity as an effective solution for urban transit.
