Car-free development

Abstract: Car-free developments are ‘residential or mixed-use developments which: (a) provide a traffic-free or nearly traffic-free immediate environment; (b) are designed to facilitate movement by non-car means; (c) offer no parking for residents or limited parking separated from the dwellings’ (Melia, Barton, & Parkhurst, 2013, p. 136). There are three main types: a model where car ownership is controlled and any parking is remote, a limited-access model, where vehicular access is physically restricted, and pedestrianised centres with significant residential populations. Despite the significant benefits they offer to cities struggling with traffic, and some evidence of success, the concept has seen limited application.
