Carbon offsetting
Robert Mayer
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 80-81 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Carbon offsetting enables organisations and individuals to contribute to schemes that deliver carbon emissions savings on behalf of organisations or individuals. For organisations, these schemes can be mandatory or voluntary, while for individuals these are voluntary. In transport practice and research, carbon-offsetting schemes often cover aviation; however, they are also used for other modes such as shipping and private cars. Despite their growth, there are significant scientific and ethical doubts about the effectiveness and accuracy of carbon-offsetting schemes.
