Charter airlines

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 82-83 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Charter airlines focus on non-scheduled commercial flights. These are flights hired by an individual or an organisation for a trip on a specific date and with a specific purpose. Although the purposes can be highly diverse, since the 1960s charter airlines have been closely linked to the transport of European tourists to destinations in the Mediterranean basin on package holidays marketed by tour operators. The emergence of low-cost airlines and the growing preference for tailor-made trips has reduced their market share. However, they continue to have a significant presence in Europe, where many have been converted into leisure airlines.
