A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 86-87 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The year 2023 was the warmest ever recorded and triggered extreme weather events globally that have negatively impacted life on Earth. Climate change is a real threat, and urgent action is required to reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere and adapt our cities. Transport remains a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and has failed to reduce its burden on the environment despite technological advancements in vehicles and fuels. The concerns over climate change cannot be tackled through technological innovation alone. Demand-side measures, market-based measures, and regulations are required to curtail and mitigate transport consumption.
