Climate change and aviation
Tim Ryley
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 88-89 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This contribution initially summarises the evidence for climate change and the contribution of aviation emissions. The underlying challenge of air travel growth is then presented. Mitigation is covered in terms of behavioural change and technological measures, particularly around alternative fuels for aviation. The need for adaptation in the aviation industry is then outlined. A concluding paragraph covers the balance between the environmental challenge of climate change for aviation and the economically and socially sustainable aspects of air travel.
