Coach services
Peter White
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 90-91 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Coach services comprise both scheduled long-distance (express) services and excursion, tour and private hire operations. They are typically operated by high-specification vehicles attaining much greater utilisation than local buses. In many cases, they are subject to much less price and quantity regulation than local public transport, stimulating service innovation and price competition, especially with rail. They may also provide direct links to major airports and special events. Although deregulation has initially produced strong competition from many operators, consolidation into fewer large networks is often observed, with smaller operators functioning as contractors to larger operators such as National Express or Flixbus.
