Coastal ferry

James D. Frost and Mary R. Brooks

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 92-93 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: After defining what a ferry is, and specifically a coastal ferry, the entry provides an example of a coastal ferry that has exceeded expectations in delivering value to customers and service to communities: Hurtigruten. The entry explores the demand and supply factors in coastal ferries and identifies that there are unique considerations for each coastal ferry service. It concludes with a look at new technologies in propulsion and the possibilities of autonomous ferries.
