Congestion
Roger Vickerman
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 98-99 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Congestion is a recurrent issue in the study of transport. This contribution introduces the basic engineering and economic analysis of congestion for both roads and public transport before introducing some extensions to the basic model. The social welfare loss associated with congestion is defined. There is a brief discussion of pricing responses to congestion in contrast to predict and provide approaches.
