Crowding in public transport
Chinh Q. Ho
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 102-103 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Crowding on public transport occurs when the number of passengers exceeds vehicle capacity, leading to discomfort, safety concerns, and service disruptions. Crowding impacts operational efficiency and traveller wellbeing. Crowding disproportionately affects vulnerable groups, causing lost productivity and pushing commuters towards private vehicles, posing significant threats to achieving the net zero target. Solutions involve infrastructure expansion, policy reforms, and technological innovations to improve network planning, service frequency, and passenger experience. Future strategies include leveraging telecommuting and Mobility as a Service (MaaS) to distribute demand and enhance urban mobility, underscoring the need for integrated approaches to ensure sustainable, efficient public transport systems.
