Cycling

John Parkin

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 104-105 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: There are many varieties of cycles including hand-cranked, e-cycles, cargo cycles and wheel-chair clip-on cycles. Several developed nations have a cycling mode share of 1–2%, others have larger shares of up to 28% in the Netherlands. There is great variability in use between cities. In high cycling contexts, representation across social groups is closer to being equal. Compared with the car, the cycle has efficiency and environmental benefits, including physical activity with its concomitant health benefits. Enablers are compact urban form and a comprehensive network of routes separated from both pedestrians and motor vehicles that are attractive, comfortable and safe.
