A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 110-111 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Dark stores have gained significant interest, as quick commerce companies rely on them to offer fast deliveries (10–20 minutes) to neighbourhoods within a radius of two kilometres. However, their impacts on sustainability can be significant. We clarify the meaning of ‘dark store’, identifying its principal characteristics. Furthermore, the principal factors that should be considered when implementing this strategy are identified, and a list of advantages and disadvantages is also provided. Finally, the implications of dark stores on sustainability, such as high structural costs, consumption of public space, and non-compliance with land use, are identified.
