Decarbonisation
Brian Caulfield
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 114-115 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Decarbonisation is the process of reducing and or removing carbon. Decarbonisation needs to occur across all sectors (agriculture, built environment, energy, housing and transport, etc.) to reduce the potential catastrophic impacts of climate change. There are many ways in which to frame the pathways to achieving decarbonisation in the transport sector. One of the most-used methods is to adopt the process of Avoid, Shift, Improve (A-S-I). First developed in Germany in the 1990s, this framework or variations of it have been adopted by many national governments to pursue decarbonisation in this sector.
