Demand-responsive transport

Steve Wright and Barbara T.H. Yen

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 116-117 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Demand-responsive transport (DRT) services are public transport services which differ from conventional public transport because users determine the service routes and timings. DRT has been introduced to improve public transport provision in lower density suburban, rural and remote areas. There are a range of DRT service concepts that are typically defined by service design elements, such as service vehicle types (registered or non-registered bus), route types (e.g., fixed or semi-fixed corridor) and service area (e.g., flexible or fixed area). This entry looks at the critical design elements of DRT service and potential implications.
