Abstract:
Despite ongoing enforcement and education efforts to reduce drink driving and growing community disapproval of the behaviour, drink driving continues to be a major contributing factor to road crash fatalities and serious injuries. Alcohol consumption inhibits the ability to drive safely, even at low levels of consumption. Critically, the implementation of evidence-based countermeasures to reduce drink driving, with a systems-based approach, is necessary to eliminate this ongoing road safety issue. Beyond drivers’ experiences and individual factors that influence engagement in drink driving, broader contributing factors including road safety and alcohol use policy, rules and regulations, and societal factors should be addressed.
