E-bikes

Miguel Loyola

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 126-127 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: E-bikes present a promising but complex addition to the urban mobility landscape. Their potential to contribute to environmental sustainability, enhance public health, and reduce transportation costs is substantial. However, the successful integration of e-bikes into urban transport systems requires addressing safety concerns and regulatory challenges, coupled with supportive policies to foster widespread adoption. Moreover, investments in infrastructure, such as dedicated bike lanes and secure parking, are essential. As cities continue to evolve, e-bikes could play a pivotal role in shaping sustainable, efficient, and accessible urban environments.
