A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 128-129 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
E-cargo bikes have emerged as a promising alternative to motorised forms of urban cargo delivery, especially in the last mile. Since the early 2000s, many types of e-cargo bike have been developed to serve different mobility needs in cities worldwide. This entry reviews the purpose, scope, and characteristics of e-cargo bikes, identifies common trip purposes, and comments on potential barriers to further market development.
