A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 130-131 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Since its emergence in the late 1990s, e-commerce has experienced rapid and significant growth, particularly with regard to business-to-consumer transactions. This has substantial implications for the environment and urban living conditions, primarily through increased CO2 emissions and urban congestion due to more frequent deliveries. This necessitates a comprehensive reassessment of urban logistics and transport requirements. Effective strategies require an in-depth analysis of the unique e-commerce transport demand and strong collaborations between the public and private sectors to enhance data collection and implement appropriate solutions capable of reconciling operational efficiency with environmental sustainability and urban quality of life.
