Equity
Karel Martens
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 138-139 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Equity, often equated with fairness and justice, involves three dimensions: distribution, recognition, and representation. Historically, transport research has overlooked these dimensions, treating the field as value-neutral. This has markedly changed over the past decade. Recognition of marginalised groups and their travel experiences is gaining traction in transport research, while novel tools have been proposed to enhance representation and deepen participation in transport decision-making. Seemingly neutral distributive analyses are gradually giving way to explicitly normative assessments of injustices in accessibility, widely considered the core benefit of transport systems. Yet, consensus about what would constitute equity in transport is still far away.
