E-scooters

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 140-141 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
E-scooters have gained popularity and sparked debates in recent years. They may be defined as powered micromobility vehicles equipped with a centre column and floorboard, yet lacking self-balancing capabilities and operable pedals, and are commonly classified into shared (public) e-scooters and personal (private) e-scooters. The main themes relating to e-scooters in practice and research are discussed, including safety, cost-effectiveness, sustainability, and equity. Recommendations on e-scooter policymaking are made, emphasising e-scooters’ positive potential to support urban transport as a sustainable, accessible, and affordable mobility choice.
