Fairness

Vanessa Ternes

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 146-147 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This entry first introduces various concepts of fairness, both from wider moral philosophy and from transport studies. Then, the use of the term ‘fairness’ is discussed and put into context with equity and justice. The concept of Just Transitions is introduced as a widely used approach for conceptualising fairness. The entry ends with thoughts on how the climate crisis necessitates a deeper engagement with fairness in transport.
