First- and last-mile connection
Christoffel Venter
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 152-153 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The first- and last-mile connection to passenger transport almost always includes a walk (or non-motorised) component, but could also entail a trip by car, local bus, or bicycle. The length of the trip might vary depending on personal, environmental, and modal characteristics. It is important for city and transport authorities to pay attention to the quality of the first/last-mile trip because it is often the slowest, most unsafe, or most physically demanding part of the trip, and may constrain people's willingness to use public transport. A number of evaluation tools are available to help measure and monitor the quality of the first/last-mile environment.
