Food logistics

Abstract: Food logistics involves those logistics activities (such as warehousing, transportation, packaging, labelling, temperature control and data processing) in the food supply chain, from primary production to the point of consumption. To ensure an encompassing circularity perspective, it also discusses the role of logistics in the various pathways food can take, such as surplus redistribution, animal feed, recycling and waste disposal. It emphasises the need for efficiency, cost-effectiveness and sustainability. The entry further highlights some challenges unique to food logistics, innovations in last-mile deliveries and the importance of logistics service providers and specialised infrastructure in maintaining food quality and security.
