Forced car ownership is a term that has been used to describe those who for whom car ownership is a financial burden. Those who own a car, despite low incomes or financial hardship are considered forced car owners, with an assumption they have no alternatives to meet accessibility needs. It is related to other concepts such as transport-related social exclusion and transport poverty. This entry outlines the origins and assumptions behind the concept of forced car ownership, considers factors that force car ownership and reflects on increasing rates of forced car ownership as a result of systemic issues.
