Aerotropolis

Matt Faber and Isabella Kim

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 18-19 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This entry outlines what the aerotropolis concept implies for land use and transport practitioners seeking to maximise benefits, and minimise negative impacts from investment in a new international airport and associated land uses. It cites examples including the Western Sydney Aerotropolis to highlight specific opportunities and challenges associated with all large international airports and, by extension, aerotropolises. These initiatives leverage investment through their function as focused transfer points for passenger and freight movement, are large and complex developments crossing multiple literal and figurative jurisdictional boundaries, and rely on the participation and coordination of both government and private equity.
