Freight transport policy
Jason Monios
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 162-163 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This entry provides an overview of the different areas of freight transport policy, such as managing the provision of freight transport and using regulation to meet economic and environmental policy aims. All four modes (road, rail, water, air) are compared and discussed. Freight transport policy is less interventionist than passenger transport, and greater involvement of the private sector has been observed as a result of market liberalisation policies implemented through privatisation and deregulation. In recent years, decarbonisation and other environmental policy targets have been set, aiming to be achieved through diverse measures such as engine regulation and market-based measures.
