A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 166-167 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Full-service network carriers (FSNCs) are carriers that operate at a higher cost relative to low-cost airlines. They provide full-service and high-quality product portfolios by establishing high levels of network connectivity. FSNCs focus on network profitability (often via hub-and-spoke) and options, while low-cost carriers focus on route profitability and point-to-point connectivity. This entry summarises the historical origins, operating characteristics, reasons for high operating costs, and future outlook for full-service network carriers.
