Ageing
Charles Musselwhite
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 20-21 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Populations around the world are ageing, and older people are more mobile than previous generations. In many countries, older people are increasingly driving vehicles, although they may face physiological or cognitive changes that affect their ability to drive safely. Alternatives to the car tend to be poorly designed for older people. There are many infrastructural barriers to walking and cycling, but social norms are important too. Public transport can offer solutions for older people, but staff are crucial in making older people feel safe and welcome. Overall, more involvement of older people in transport system design is needed.
