Hazardous materials transport by rail

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 182-183 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Hazardous materials, or hazmat, are defined as substances capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property when transported. The major risk of rail hazmat transportation is the release of hazmat from damaged/derailed railcars resulting from a train accident, which can lead to human injuries and fatalities, environmental contamination, property damage, economic loss, and other consequences. Three perspectives to assess and mitigate rail hazmat transportation risk are: (1) improve structural integrity of hazmat railcars; (2) reduce accident risk of the railroad system; (3) optimise hazmat transportation routing in the rail network.
