Home deliveries

Leon Booth and Simone Pettigrew

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 188-189 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The surge in e-commerce has rapidly increased demand for home deliveries. The global food delivery market alone tripled between 2017 and 2021 to be worth US$150 billion. Consumer satisfaction hinges on swift and efficient delivery. However, home deliveries are resource-intensive and can be complicated by factors such as traffic congestion, non-attendance of receiving customers, package returns, and workforce shortages. Emissions generated by home deliveries are also a concern, but they can be a sustainable alternative to in-store purchases under certain conditions. Industry is implementing and developing strategies to adapt to challenges, including the use of crowdshipping and autonomous delivery methods.
