A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 200-201 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Infrastructure planning refers to the process of selecting the optimal solutions for the deployment of transportation systems. It applies technical and participatory tools to assess the most efficient use of resources to achieve specific planning objectives. It includes several stages based on the knowledge of the current challenges, forecasting future demand, designing alternatives, and calculating their impacts on future scenarios. It should consider the coordination of different governance levels and integrate transport modes, data sources, and technologies to provide clean and safe options to users, with the final goal of achieving better mobility choices.
