Abstract:
Highlighting the urgent need for regions to transform and adapt to grand societal challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and economic uncertainty, this chapter outlines the book's aim to advance scholarly discourses on sustainable regional restructuring from various angles in regional innovation studies and economic geography. It explores diverse perspectives on sustainable regional restructuring within economic geography and innovation studies, such as environmental economic geography, sustainability transitions, green regional path development, and challenge-oriented regional innovation systems. The chapter outlines the book's aim to advance scholarly discourse on sustainable regional restructuring, bringing together scholars to explore the topic from various angles. From here, the chapter briefly presents the 12 following original contributions in the book, providing novel theoretical advancements, empirical evidence, and policy implications for regional sustainability transitions.
