Questioning the economic growth paradigm

Abstract: This chapter questions the economic growth paradigm and examines the notion of economic growth independence as an alternative to the mainstream economic growth paradigm. This is particularly relevant for peripheral regions, which benefit less from economic growth dynamics when compared to core regions. Peripheral regions may have a hard time capturing economic growth dynamics because of a variety of factors, including the thin endowment of economic actors and institutions. The chapter will outline the notion of growth-independent development and will connect the concept with sustainability transitions in peripheral regions. The concept will be illustrated through a synthesis of research results derived from various ongoing and finalised research projects in mountain regions in the European Alps, with a specific focus on Switzerland. The chapter pays particular attention to the ways in which entrepreneurial motivations, transformative enterprises, and social innovations can contribute to growth independence.
