Chapter 13 in Sustainable Regional Restructuring, 2025, pp 193-206 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this concluding section, we critically engage with contemporary discussions in economic geography and innovation studies surrounding sustainable regional restructuring, highlighting several areas that remain insufficiently explored or overlooked. Focusing specifically on the literature on regional industrial path development, we propose a future research agenda aimed at (1) deepening our understanding of the fragility and volatility of green paths, (2) addressing the uneven geographies of exnovation and brown path decline, (3) exploring under-researched forms of agency, (4) assessing the economic, social, and environmental outcomes of sustainable regional restructuring, and (5) charting future directions for place-based innovation and industrial policies.
