Regional and occupational mobility paths following firm closures in Germany

Abstract: The closure of a firm could be a turning point in employment biographies of displaced workers; they often face long-term disadvantages after such job losses. We expect that regional and occupational mobility of displaced workers is supportive for resilient transitions. In this chapter, we aim to map the different patterns of post-exit occupational and regional mobility paths and the characteristics of re-employment strategies. We study labour market transitions of a sample of 80 000 workers up to three years after displacement (2014–2019) in Germany. First, we examine which switches between sectors and occupations can be observed when transitioning into post-exit employment. A measure of task co-occurrence across occupations is used to map the skill similarity between pre- and post-exit occupations. Second, we conduct regression analyses to examine the relationship between individual, firm- and region-specific factors, and post-exit strategies of regional and occupational job mobility.
