I can make my own decision: linking (im)mobility to connectivity among Romanian young people from return-migrant family backgrounds

Silvia Marcu

Chapter 3 in Handbook of Labour Mobility, 2026, pp 34-47 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter contributes to (im)mobility studies in terms of desires and plans to move, among young people who were born abroad and returned to Romania during childhood or adolescence. Based on 60 in-depth interviews with undergraduates, it analyses the perspectives of young returnees concerning (im)mobility and linked to their virtual and/or spatial connectivity. The analysis detects two profiles of young people that link (im)mobility with connectivity: (a) those who desire to live and work in Romania; and (b) those who plan to practise mobility for study, travel or work temporarily abroad. The findings show that most young Romanians born abroad (37 respondents) essentially desire to remain in Romania, while another group of respondents (23) plan to move temporarily. This may create a new trend in the future international mobility of Romanian citizens.
