Adoption and impact of clean cooking technologies in Kenyan households

Emmanuel Kinoti

Chapter 11 in Handbook on Energy Transitions in Africa, 2026, pp 180-198 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Clean cooking is essential for daily life and plays a vital role in improving overall quality of life, particularly in underprivileged communities. Over the past decade, progress has been made in adopting clean cooking technologies such as biomass stoves and bioLPG. These technologies provide economic and nutritional benefits while contributing to broader social well-being. This chapter examines both the benefits of clean cooking solutions, and the challenges households face in adopting them. A strategic approach is needed – one that recognizes community needs to ensure sustainable, affordable, and environmentally friendly cooking options. The Pay-As-You-Go model offers a promising pathway by enabling continuous access and reducing the health and environmental risks associated with traditional fuel use. This model also supports maternal health, helping prevent negative outcomes for mothers and infants. The chapter highlights emerging clean cooking technologies and stresses the importance of an efficient fuel supply chain for long-term success.
