Chapter 15 in Handbook on Energy Transitions in Africa, 2026, pp 251-268 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter provides the energy landscape in Tanzania, explaining the country's energy potentials, its energy transitions journey and its challenges. The introduction provides an important overview of the energy subsector in Tanzania, highlighting the diverse energy sources, the energy consumption in Tanzania, and energy access, specifically the access to electricity in Tanzania. The potential and actual energy generation in Tanzania are covered in detail in order to show how Tanzania is rich in both renewable and non-renewable energy resources. The institutional and legal framework of the energy sector in Tanzania has been provided in order to show how the government of Tanzania interacts with key stakeholders in the energy sector and how that engagement is legally guided. Tanzania has been making some headway on transition to cleaner energy. The current progress Tanzania is making on energy transition is presented. The chapter concludes by highlighting the key challenges facing the Tanzanian energy sector.
