Chapter 18 in Handbook on Energy Transitions in Africa, 2026, pp 300-316 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The East African Community's transition to green energy offers unprecedented opportunities and formidable challenges to reshape its development trail. This chapter evaluates the current energy mix, potential for green energy, critical minerals, challenges, and possible solutions to the Green Energy Transition in the East African Community. It also discusses the national and regional policies and strategies, as well as the socio-economic and environmental implications of the Green Energy Transition. The review proposes comprehensive and strengthened regional cooperation, innovative financing mechanisms and community-positioned approaches. Importantly, the Green Energy Transition emerges as a climate change imperative and a powerful economic development catalyst for energy security and regional integration. The chapter concludes that a collective action leveraging the East African Community's regional integration status and rich green energy potential can propel the region to meet its climate goals and energy needs while addressing its pressing economic development needs.
