Future prospects for Africa's energy transition

Alanda Venter and Roula Inglesi-Lotz

Chapter 21 in Handbook on Energy Transitions in Africa, 2026, pp 347-363 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides an oversight of Africa's energy transition. Starting with a brief overview of the energy landscape of the continent, it highlights some of the challenges faced, specifically concerning the energy transition. A summary follows of the IEA World Energy Outlook and BP's Energy Outlook, where the main scenarios and their assumptions regarding renewable energy, oil production, and natural gas are discussed. Following this, there is an in-depth discussion of the opportunities the African energy transition presents, covering the mineral and resource sectors, government and investment, infrastructure, and technology. Lastly, the chapter gives an overview of the cultural and social aspects that need to be addressed within the energy transition.
