Chapter 5 in Handbook on Energy Transitions in Africa, 2026, pp 75-96 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 aims to ensure affordable, reliable, and universal access to energy, as well as to accelerate global progress in energy efficiency. In this chapter, we examine the role of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in the global energy transition. The country holds immense potential in renewable energy sources. For instance, the DRC's hydroelectric power potential, which could meet Sub-Saharan Africa's energy needs, remains largely underutilized. This significant energy gap is shaped by several factors, including weak utility performance, limited financial sustainability, and governance challenges. On the other hand, the DRC possesses vast reserves of critical minerals essential for renewable energy technologies. However, the DRC faces considerable challenges such as infrastructure deficits, regulatory and governance bottlenecks, and social constraints that prevent it from fully emerging as a leader in the global climate and energy agenda. These hurdles add complexity to the country's energy transition efforts.
