Introduction: why another handbook?

Abstract: Two unique features distinguish this Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology from other recent handbooks in the field: Predominantly early-career researchers as contributors of the substantive chapters; and the ‘retrospective’ section where some of the classic empirical papers in the history of evolutionary psychology are revisited, sometimes with the original authors of the studies. I recount the infamous ‘Miller-Kanazawa debate’ in the online journal Evolutionary Psychology, and offer my own verdict on the winner of the debate with the benefit of 20-year hindsight. I explain why I believe that the future of evolutionary psychology is bleak, due to increased politicization of the field, partly as a result of greater representation of women and anthropologists in the field. I conclude the chapter with a brief introduction to the contents of the volume.
