The future of evolutionary psychology
Jose C. Yong
Chapter 2 in Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology, 2026, pp 16-38 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The current chapter explores the opportunities and challenges faced by evolutionary psychology in light of its historical context, its strengths and limitations, the similarities and differences between the various camps within the evolutionary social science space, and regional variations in receptivity to evolutionary psychology to assess the future viability of the discipline. In so doing, I highlight a variety of promising avenues for evolutionary psychological research, such as integrations with other fields (e.g., cultural evolution, evo-devo/devo-evo, neuroscience), addressing real-world issues, and a greater focus on cooperation and prosociality, while offering suggestions on how we might overcome resistance toward evolutionary psychology, including greater embeddedness of evolutionary thinking in university curricula, applying evolutionary psychology ideas to solving practical problems, and just steadfastly doing the good science that our spirited researchers have been doing. I conclude that evolutionary psychology shows no signs of slowing down, and its future looks bright.
