Measuring bias in intergroup judgment

Abstract: Intergroup judgment has long been a focus of researchers in social psychology. A better understanding of the structure and psychological processes that shape such judgments has the potential to shed light on consequential outcomes related to intergroup prejudice and discrimination. This chapter reviews several prominent approaches for assessing intergroup bias in social judgment and discusses common strengths and limitations of these approaches. We pay particular attention to a relatively more recent measure, the Judgment Bias Task (JBT), reviewing past research using the JBT and highlighting how the measure advances our understanding of social judgment. Finally, we discuss future directions in research on intergroup judgment, and how efforts to understand this construct can be improved in terms of both generalizability and validity.
